This trip was two years ago if I remember correctly this was our last weekend getaway as a family of three, soon after this trip I gave birth to our second child baby boy. Because of that reason, we decided not to travel far, and Corpus Christi was our choice. Now that we travel as a family we need to consider and included our son for our trip plan. So, our first stop was.
TEXAS STATE AQUARIUM
If you are in Corpus Christi or if you are planning to visit the city, this place must be on your list. Brenan had a wonderful time at the aquarium. I would recommend it to anyone young or old. The majority of it is indoors which was wonderful on a hot summers day. They had some exciting shows and demonstrations, and you even got to hold/touch some of the sea creatures.
The Dolphin show was the highlight for our son. The shows are all about 10-15 minutes long. They are not kidding about getting to the dolphin show around 30 minutes early if you want seats. Don’t miss the dolphin room! You can watch the dolphin show from in there because they have a live feed on some big screen TVs so you can see what’s going on up top. It’s air-conditioned and possibly less crowded!
It is also very clean and sets right on the Gulf of Mexico with a beautiful view of the Corpus Christi Shoreline and the U.S.S. Lexington. Food and drinks are available, as well as a gift shop. There is a small charge for parking. I recommend going on a weekday, if possible, and getting there early (at opening) before it gets too crowded. As you enter, pick up a map of the place and the schedule of shows so that you can plan your day. If you want to leave for lunch, Blackbeard’s is within walking distance and has delicious seafood.
If you buy your tickets online for a M-F visit, you save $4 off the adult ticket price.
There is an amazing-looking splash pad for the little ones (free with aquarium admission), so if you have small children bring swimsuits and stuff.
Overall we had a good time, and the splash park was a big perk for the little ones. My husband and I enjoyed the exhibits. Dolphin show was very informative.
USS LEXINGTON, CV-16, is a World War II-vintage Essex Class aircraft carrier. Commissioned in 1943, she served the United States longer and set more records than any other Essex Class carrier in the history of naval aviation. The ship was the oldest working carrier in the United States Navy when decommissioned in 1991. An Essex-class carrier, LEXINGTON was originally named the USS CABOT. During World War II, final construction was being completed at Massachusetts’ Fore River Shipyard when word was received that the original carrier named USS LEXINGTON, CV-2, had been sunk in the Coral Sea. The new carrier’s name was changed to LEXINGTON. (Source)
Be prepared to do a lot of walking. The ship is huge & the tour easily takes about 4 hours to see completely. I’ve heard about ghosts being on this ship but we never encountered one. If you are interested many different aspects of the past wars the USS Lexington has a ton to offer. It does get a bit warm, but I think it’s worth going in and taking a look. Great place!
WHERE TO EAT
Blackbeard’s is your typical seaside fish joint. The decor is not fancy but the food and service were good and the live music was awesome. The place was clean. Bathrooms were in a strange area, but no big deal. Went on a Sunday night and they had live entertainment in the back room. Overall a good experience and we most definitely go back. Prices were reasonable.
STROLLING DOWNTOWN CORPUS CHRISTI
WHERE TO EAT
LANDRY’S SEAFOOD HOUSE
Landry’s is a classy restaurant, located on an old boat on the marina. The nightime views of the lit-up downtown are lovely. The food was so good. It’s not particularly cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Location is close to the Texas State Aquarium and the USS Lexington.
Great location on the bay with balcony. Room was clean and nice and pool was nice. Room service was very good. Short walk to ferry boat and nice restaurants on the water. If staying in the side facing the bridge you have a great night time view as well. Great stay overall! Highly recommend.
The pool is small, but it was nice to spend the day relaxing by it and getting some much needed R&R.
