Known around the globe as the place to work in TV and film, many budding actors head to Los Angeles to secure jobs and make connections. Home to some of the biggest production studios in the world, it is no surprise that international actors have been on the move for many years.
While Los Angeles has a worldwide reputation for being the place to be, frankly – it is expensive. Despite the high standard of training, training as an actor in the US is not cheap. For this reason, many principals complete their training in other countries (where training is cheaper or financed) and then go to the US. Alternatively, some actors choose to perfect their skills and rise to the top of their game in their home country, before trying their luck abroad. Actors like Tom Hardy, Monica Bellucci and Penelope Cruz have all come to Hollywood after having great success nationally.
While LA’s gravitational pull on many actors is clear, there are some things to consider beforehand. From getting to know the US immigration system, to personal finance – we have put together a list of some of the top considerations if you are about to make the big move.
Savings
With exorbitantly high rents and prohibitive travel costs – expenses soon escalated. Add to this that you possibly have not landed an acting job yet, and it is easy to see how unpreparedness can lead to financial ruin.
To make it big in LA, it is vital to invest in yourself (and your career!) before you can step onto a set. From getting high-quality headshots, to training sessions, and even memberships to SAG-AFTRA – these are all important steps to consider.
Industry knowledge
While that’s a given, it at all times pays to do your research. Spend time researching the industry and avoid common pitfalls.
Stay professional
While the extreme competition can be intimidating, it is at all times best to keep things professional. Beginner’s luck and being in the ‘right place at the right time’ will get you this far, but unflinching professionalism and thick skin are well worth it. Be prepared for rejection and at all times present yourself in the best light. After all, gossip can travel fast in the film industry.
Start the immigration process early
If you want to move to LA and act for money, you must be accepted by a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services agent. To get hired, you must be granted your rights green card.
To do this, it’s advisable to hire an experienced immigration lawyer who will submit your case to USCIC. By hiring an expert who knows the ins and outs of the immigration system, you are much more likely to be accepted, allowing you to focus on your Hollywood acting journey.
Start running
Don’t chill and let the opportunities come to you. As soon as your flight lands in LA, consider putting yourself into acting. From joining community actor groups, to yoga classes – the more ways you can network, the better.
Being an actor can be tough, and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. But with the right drive, determination, and persistence – budding actors can make their dreams come true by moving to LA.
