Lebron James has opted out of his contract with the Miami Heat for the upcoming 2014-15 season. As expected although, heat fans are wondering if a four-time MVP will get their team to the next championship. James is without a doubt the top free agent this season averaging 27 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists per game. With suitors like the Knicks, Bulls, and Mavericks, all the pressure is on Pat Riley as he has to convince James Miami is where he belongs. The Heat could offer James another max contract worth 127 million, 33 million more than any competitor for James. While the money was tempting, it was clear it was not the deciding factor for James as he took less money to bring his talent to South Beach leaving over 10 million dollars in Cleveland.
Even although Lebron is exploring his options, this could be a move of strength for Miami behind closed doors. By opting out, it gives the Heat more flexibility in acquiring more quality players. Lebron could attract fellow star Carmelo Anthony to the team. The other options for Lebron do not put him in a better position for the championship than the Heat. New York is rebuilding and has a decent perimeter roster but is not at all star level now that Melo has opted out. Chicago did not seem right for Lebron as he had to live in Michael Jordan’s shadow and fall prey to criticism. Not to mention he had the opportunity to go in there and refuse even although they had a healthy star in Rose and Noah at the time. Dallas might be the second best option for James with all stars Nowitski, Ellis, and former defensive player of the year, Chandler. All of those options still fall short of the Heat as they made a historic four year run to the NBA finals which resulted in 2 NBA championships.
Analysts believe the Heat just need some “nice tuning” at the point guard and center positions. Lebron wants to keep winning and will go where he thinks is best for a third championship run. There’s no doubt whichever team Lebron lands on will automatically be a championship contender. For now Heat fans will must wait and see the free agency craze continues.
