Comic books have at all times been seen as the epitome of a kid’s item; with lots of pictures, minimal words, and bright colours. Growing up, it was my grandma’s way of shutting me up so I did not ask for candy. Many of my books are in the same way as candy wrappers; in the trash. However, after this weekend, I doubt anyone will ever make that mistake again.
Over 70 years ago, two kids wrote a comic book a couple of man with superhuman strength, heat vision, and a hideous secret identity (really? Glasses?). It was a convincing success, and not the last for the man who would become Superman. The ten-cent premiere (Action Comics #1) just sold for $3.2 million to Stephen Fishler and Vincent Zurzolo, co-owners of www.ComicConnect.com. This 1938 book has become the holy grail of comic book collectors. Its score of 9.0 (on a scale of 10), is also the highest ever found. Most comic books (like other paper-based goods) fray and turn yellow over time. This particular copy was accidentally deposited in a cedar chest in West Virginia. There are an estimated 100 copies left, in diverse circumstances, of Action Comics #1.
As a comic fan, seeing the gems ahead is astonishing. It also makes me regret getting my chocolate-laden fingers dirty all over those collectibles as a child.
