Chaz Hazlitt and Michael Checo, most usually referred to as Chaz and Checo, have a lot in common. Some common traits they share are, their genuine passion for barbering, their ambition/work ethic, and wherever they’re now and where they plan to go, they won’t ever forget their roots.
Both of these men are thriving business owners Stache’s barber in Union Township, NJ. Since January 2013 Chaz and Checo have been productively running their shop together (together with the impeccable help of their staff of four additional barbers), have created a well known and growing brand name and both have bigger plans for the future. in front of Stache.
Success does not all the time come easy, and these people are prime examples of how hard work and persistence really pay off. Chaz and Checo formed a brotherhood at a really young age. When Chaz was only 21 years old, he met 9 year old Checo by chance, when Checo walked into the barbershop where Chaz was working at the time. Days, weeks then months passed and Checo spent more and more of his time giving up opportunities to play with his 10 year old friends, to be in the shop. He started by simply sweeping floors but all the time watching closely how Chaz worked. Eventually he started practicing and Chaz became kind of a mentors for him. “I never had an older brother, I grew up with two older sisters, so I think when I was a kid I started seeing him as a brother,” Checo said. “And I never had a little brother either, so it worked,” Chaz replied. Since then their loyalty and bond has been unbreakable.
Curtis Smith, Celebrity Barber to numerous artists like P. Diddy And Deliver And Team Xotics Creator, is the person in command of the barbershop and the current owner of the Chaz business. “He really pushed me into the world,” says Chaz as he remembers the first time he met Smith and the way he mentored and helped Chaz. Meanwhile, Checo built a home business in his basement where he was continuously cutting hair and his name became known by word of mouth in and around his hometown of Union. “I have people calling me for a haircut any time of the day/night and no matter what time of day or what I’m doing, I stop to get a cut. It has never bothered or bothered me to get so many calls because I’m doing what I love. said Czech.
Before Stache, both had gone through trial and error; worked in several shops for a time, and at one point Chaz stepped away from the barber life for several years to pursue a career in the music industry. Even although they gain knowledge and experience through their trials, in the end they aren’t truly contented and know that something is not right. “I feel like we outgrew the shop we worked for, and we both wanted more. So the same day I left where I was, I went around town and immediately started looking for a place,” shared Checo, “As soon as I found a place, I called Chaz and said ‘Let’s open a shop.’” To which Chaz quickly, without thought long answered, “Let’s go!”
Together, the men put their complete trust in each other and take a leap of faith. Without delay, they started construction, which took about four months to complete and, yet again, together Chaz and Checo worked towards their future. During construction, they continued their barbering business and found themselves back to their roots, in a Checo garage with just two seats and an endless stream of consumers. They concurrently traveled across the country attending numerous events and spent many sleepless nights at their future store in preparation for the grand opening planned for January 2013.
The goal the duo set for their store was to have a diversified and comfy environment. Their customers range from young kids, highschool/college students, fathers/grandparents, local businessmen, CEOs, and even celebrities like Usher, P. Diddy, Machine Gun Kelly, DJ Khaled and much more. It is important and private for Chaz and Checo to have a place where “different walks of life”, feel snug and at home every time they step foot in Stache Barbers. Their store environment is not the only important goal. Post-construction, the guys still did not have a name for their shop, even after numerous brainstorming meetings.
Nevertheless, as destiny would have it, during their meeting with their accountant to finalize the contract, Chaz gets a call from Elliot Chester, a friend and fellow barber/business owner. Elliot & Co. Elliot will soon be traveling from Las Vegas, NV to New York and needs to use the barber’s chair for an event he will be attending soon at City Field. “We’re going to shave Keith Hernandez!” Elliot told Chaz. “Staches? I was trying to think of a name for my barber shop what if I…” and before Chaz could finish his sentence, Elliot replied, “Let’s call it Stache!” Chaz and Checo both agree that a mustache is probably the most prominent features on a man, it symbolizes strength and growth. Two nouns that this couple has achieved through their constant bustle and ambition.
Contracts are signed as soon as their names are final. Later with their family, friends and clients, Chaz Hazlitt and Michael Checo celebrated the grand opening of Stache Barbers on January 18, 2013. Stache Barbershop is not only a store but also a brand name. They have created clothing for barbers by barbers, they’re soon planning to create their own product line and recently launched special razor called “The Rebel,” will beautify a barber’s hands and bring magic to shops everywhere.
The professionalism related to Stache Barbers and their brand not only satisfies their clientele, but also meets the needs of their staff who are lucky enough to be part of an institution led by humble people who don’t easily achieve success, but build it themselves through sweat, water eyes, and risk. When asked what was most vital to them as barbers and co-owners of the business, Chaz and Checo replied: “We don’t consider ourselves their boss, we are here and working alongside our staff. Instead of delegating, we want to demonstrate a work ethic. Neither of us are here for the power ride. We try to lead by example to build other leaders like us, so that in the future we can build together as a team.”
