On March 14, Harrison Ford announced that he was gearing up for Indiana Jones 5. Steven Spielberg, who directed the first four films, will return for the newest Indiana Jones. This film will be released in theaters July 19, 2019.
Despite previous rumors, Ford will play Indiana Jones. It was thought that Ford, who would have been 76 years old at the time of release wouldn’t go ahead and it was likely that Chris Pratt, Bradley Cooper or Robert Pattinson would take on the character.
Lucasfilm began its film series in 1981 with its prequel, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, released in 1984, was followed by its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in 1989. A fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was released in 2008 and starred Shia LaBeouf. In total, the films have made almost $2 billion at the global box office.[1]
The official announcement said, “Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for the fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four of the previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project starring Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Veteran franchise Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will pay off.
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to screens in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have the perfect combination of director, producer, actor and cast, and we are so excited to be embarking on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and then thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , and 2008’s Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have made almost $2 billion at the global box office.”[2]
