Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Shaquille O’Neal are some of the Laker jerseys who have retired to raptors.
They are the legends who took the iconic montra. One more name will be joining the iconic class tonight as Kobe Bryant jerseys both 8 & 24 will be retired tonight during the Lakers’ game with the Golden State Warriors.
Kobe had probably the most iconic NBA careers few can only dream of. Fans can relive his 81 days hanging on Jalen Rose’s head, hitting crazy game winner Dwayne Wade, giving the Celtics hell in the 2010 NBA finals, and let’s not forget the classic doll commercial with Lebron. Kobe came out of the game with five titles, MVP and a gold medal. An all-time great on the ground, he left a legacy not only with his game but with his line of sneakers as well. Since his afro days with Adidas, Kobe has become one of the sneaker box’s biggest stars and Nike continues to honor Mamba with new collaborations.
Tonight during the tip off of the Lakers’ showdown with the Warriors, Nike will be releasing a new NIKEID version of Air Force 1 as a tribute to Mamba. This model includes a snakeskin upper in black, a “drop shadow swoosh” and the numbers 8 & 24 are featured on the heel. Also on the tongue features eight stars on each shoe in honor of the Lakers’ 16 titles.
Kobe Bryant’s legacy is untouched and hard for anyone to match. His swag, his charisma, his mamba mentality, and his fight for greatness will at all times be remembered. He will endlessly live in the hearts of the Laker nation and basketball fans all over the world. Check out the star shots below and make sure to watch the Mamba jersey retire tonight. (Mamba out!)
