1. Elite: Spain
If you are in the mood for an thrilling murder mystery crammed with drama, riches, and romance, then this is the show for you. This show feels like that OC, Gossip Girland any major murder mystery you can think of all rolled into one.
While on the surface, the show is a soapy teen drama, it is also quietly revolutionary. Elite addresses issues such as xenophobia, inequality, and the stigma around STDs. While it is a heavy hitter, each episode will have you on the edge of your seat.
It’s kind of hard to give this show a backstory without giving away major plot spoilers. But essentially, the first season consists of alternating scenes between flashbacks and the present.
During the current scene, we are taken to an interrogation room where we learn that a murder has occurred in the highschool. This scene consists of a police officer interrogating individual students and staff to find out what happened.
In flashback scenes, we find out about each character’s life and the drama that led to these murders. The first season was so successful, that there are now three full seasons for you to binge-watch on Netflix.
2. Cable Girls: Spain
Another excellent foreign language show to watch coming out of Spain is Cable Girl.
If you like drama, romance, strong female leads, and amazing period clothing (from the 1920’s), then this is the show for you. Cable Girl follows the lives of a group of charming female phone operators in the 1920s.
This show will offer you serious Crazy people vibes with his amazing attention to historical detail and stellar casting. With a torrid affair and a mysterious past, this show is a real telenovela at its core.
For example, one of the main protagonists arrives at the phone company because he’s falsely accused of murder. To avoid punishment, he makes a deal with an officer to commit a heist at the phone company.
Underneath the decency and drama of it all, the show takes a hard look at the issues women face even in seemingly progressive circles.
3. Dark: Germany
If Stranger Things has left you craving more supernatural intrigue, then Dark is the show for you.
Although it has been marketed as a German version Stranger Thingsmany viewers feel that this interesting mystery drama is really not selling well.
Dark is about two missing kids in a small town in Germany. Once the kids go missing, the town’s sinful past is revealed, together with the fractured relationships that exist between the four families in town who are searching for their kids.
This show is dark, ominous, and chilling. It’s also set in the 1980s, so like Stranger Things, it has generated some serious nostalgia amongst some of its viewers.

4. Circle: France or Brazil
All the shows we have talked about so far have been pretty heavy hitters. If you are searching for an easy-to-watch show that will lighten your mood, we recommend watching it Circle.
Circle is a competition-based reality show. As well as the Brazilian and French versions, there’s also an American version of the show.
Unlike most reality TV shows, where the contestants face one another continually, fighting over numerous dramas, Circle contestants aren’t allowed to see one another face to face.
Each contestant lives in a single, isolated apartment where they’re prohibited from having physical contact with each other. Instead, they can only communicate with one another through a voice-activated social messaging platform known as “The Circle”.
Each contestant competes to be the “most popular” amongst the other contestants so as not to be left out of the event. However, being popular doesn’t suggest you must be yourself. To know what we mean by this, you must watch the show!
5. Again: South Korea
If you’re a movie buff repeating day starring Bill Murray or the show Russian doll starring Natasha Lyonne, then One More Time is the show for you.
Once again follows the life of an Indie singer who signs a record deal with a major agency. The same day he signed, he dumped his girlfriend and left the band.
Then, he gets caught up in a Groundhog-esque goof that has him living the same day again and again. Part comedy, part soap-love story, this show is ideal to lift your spirits on a dreary day in quarantine.
6. Hibana-Spark: Japan
If you enjoyed Crashing Pete Holmes on HBO, then Hibana-Spark is the perfect show for you.
The show follows the story of a veteran comedian who recklessly coaches a young comedian in both career and life. Thanks to the strong acting chemistry, the journey of these two comedians is quite addictive to follow.
At times, the shows lean more towards drama than laughs, and likelihood is you will be reminded of Aziz Ansari’s show, Ruler None.
