We’ve all heard of the 1960s “flower power” trend in fashion and we shop floral prints and patterns season after season. But the importance of flowers in fashion goes far beyond that, influencing everything from original designs to runway décor and signature scents. Flowers convey emotion, beauty and set the mood for many occasions, so it is no wonder they’re an influence on designers everywhere. In the midst of this month’s New York Fashion Week, here are four ways flowers and fashion go hand in hand:
Runway decoration
High fashion brands are often inspired by the bright colours of flowers for fashion presentations and fashion shows. These flowers set the tone and create the perfect backdrop for displaying designer creations.
This season, Kate Spade New York partners with iconic flower and gift company, FTD, to recreate New York City’s lovely flower bodegas full of fresh blooms. FTD provided more than 30,000 flowers for the event, including bright pink gerbera daisies and roses in a number of bright and coral hues to match the new kate spade new york spring line. The bright floral display created a lovely, fresh and lively atmosphere for the attendees.
Design
From little black dresses to skinny jeans, there are some trends that never seem to go out of style. But one of the biggest fashion statements that have remained timeless on the runway is florals. Throughout the seasons, small and enormous floral prints fade in and out of style and represent numerous decades of fashion.
Additionally, fashion designers look to gardening inspiration in their designs. Not only do floral shapes motivate styles like tulip skirts, but some designers really take shelter in their gardens to recharge their creative juices. Gardening gives them peace and quiet when they’re feeling low.
Aroma
The fashion industry does not stop at apparel. Many famous designers have created their own perfumes or perfume lines to complement their clothes and accessories. In 1919, Coco Chanel launched Chanel No. 5, a perfume made to get the essence of a single garden flower. It remains the best-selling fragrance today and Chanel has released a number of other scents for men and ladies.
Accessories
Shades and floral patterns find their way into the latest fashion accessory designs season after season, particularly in spring. Spring fashions are often marked with bright floral colours to herald the end of winter and warmer weather. Bold, floral-inspired accessories like handbags, jewelery and shoes are used in looks across the fashion runways to add unforeseen pops of color for a very irresistible look.
Without flowers, the fashion industry would be a entirely different world. Designers may have talent flowing from their fingertips, but the way they become inspired is commonly as easy as stepping into nature.
