alice + olivia by Stacey Bendet is contented to announce that the late Neo-expressionist artist and frequent Andy Warhol collaborator Jean-Michel Basquiat has been selected, through Basquiat Estate, as a partner for a second capsule collection that will help support the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s efforts to promote young talent. The collection, shown as part of the 2017 Alice + Olivia Resort season, will be available in stores and online in November 2016.
Jean-Michel Basquiat gained recognition in the art world before the age of 27, even being named the youngest artist to be given a solo performance at Germany’s widely respected KestnerGesellschaft gallery. His accomplishments and private participation in the American art movement that ushered in a new wave of young artists make Basquiat the next perfect partner for the promotion of young artists in the fashion industry.
As part of a partnership with CFDA, alice + olivia works with new artists annually to create a capsule collection that will be available for purchase in all alice + olivia stores by Stacey Bendet, aliceandolivia.comand other retail partners with 50% of proceeds from selected items going to the CFDA.
Stacey Bendet, CEO and Creative Director of alice + olivia, said, “Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of my favourite artists. This partnership appeals to me because it’s so reflective of my brand and our ongoing collaboration with artists. It’s also been great to be capable to raise funds for the CFDA and support their ongoing initiatives within our industry that nurture new talent.”
The new collection includes a range of unique clothing, accessories and gifts featuring iconic elements of Basquiat art, such as gold crowns and colourful street art-inspired designs, combined with a feminine and feminine alice + olivia twist. “Beat Bop” 1983, “Replicas” 1983, “Ascent” 1983, “In Italian” 1983, “Panel of Experts” 1982 and “Notary” 1983 are some of the artist’s notable works that Bendet cites as inspiration for his capsule collection. Elements of this iconic piece can be seen throughout clothing, accessories and gift collections. Bendet provides a modern interpretation of the iconic Basquiat artwork with the incorporation of beaded and embroidered details that add a component of dimension to iconic Basquiat pieces as they come to life in dresses, tops, skirts, jackets, handbags, shoes, eyewear and more.
