I have a secret to tell you – it isn’t often that I actually enjoy an industry event in Los Angeles. For some reason I could not get past the fluff and glamor that generally accompanies the event however, I had the opportunity last weekend to attend FIDM 23rd Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition and the night really took me by surprise. The exhibition features more than 100 costumes from the 2014 flagship films. The works on display include costumes from Maleficent, The Great Gatsby, Selma, Jersey Boys, Belle, X-Men and plenty of more.
Guests are greeted with a red carpet entry to a fantastic dinner and mixer before entering the exhibition. The participants in attendance were a mixture of students, artists, and film & fashion professionals and plenty of of the costumes on display were designed by FIDM alumni.
This is my first time attending The 23rd Annual Art of Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition and that I was amazed by the extreme detail in the designs for the five nominations for the Academy Award for Best Costume. Seeing these pieces up close and private while knowing some of my favourite actors wore them (Angelina) gave me a new appreciation for the art of costume design. The winner for Best Costume will be announced during the Oscars February 22 and I am unable to wait to see who wins. Personally, I believe Anna B. Sheppard’s designs take the cake. The organizers at FIDM were applauded for holding such an inspiring event. Check out some of the works on display below.
