As Mother’s Day approaches, I start to consider the various things my madre has taught me. A part of him that lives every day inside of me, and that I will someday pass on to my daughter. Beauty is a big part of my everyday life, and a big part of my artist. Naturally, so much of what I know about beauty was instilled in me by her. It’s a common trend I’ve noticed as my friends and that I got older, that in this respect plenty of their beauty routines are the same as their mom’s. If their mother does not wear make-up, they normally look more natural too. My mom was a really girly girl, she hardly ever wore pants, rocked big long 80s curly hair, and bright bright colours painted her face. Here are some of the pillars of beauty in my mother’s eyes.
You get what you pay for
As a young girl, all my friends had backpacks full of Smackers chapsticks you could essentially eat, and loose glitter that most probably belonged to art projects. I was jealous of those fun-looking beauty products, and would sneak around and use my friend’s at school. Until some of the glitter got into my eye, and scratched it so bad it took months to heal with medicine from the ophthalmologist. My mom does not let me wear these items, because she believes that some brands that cost a little more are better for my skin in the long run. Not only is the formula healthier, but the quality and longevity outweighs the price. While the price was a sickening realization once I had to start paying for it myself, the difference is immovable and well worth the extra dollars.
It’s Never Too Early
When you are in highschool, and growing up general skincare is not something most children consider. Once puberty kicks in and the stains start, obviously we want them to be removed, but we normally do not consider why they’re there. My mom started me on all Clinique skincare even when I was in elementary school. I did not think it mattered at the time, but he was all about prevention. Even now, I see a difference in my skin because of all the anti-aging treatments. It’s never too early to make your skin a precedence.
You Can Do Anything With Confidence
In highschool I made very questionable makeup choices. It was in a time of shiny gloss, wispy brows, and baby blue and white eye shadow. I had and still have an inclination to all the time match my makeup to my clothes; in fact to this day I am unable to do my makeup until my dress is determined. Often I get plenty of criticism for being “too fit,” or “too hard and overdone” with some of my choices. As I got older, it was more of an “I wish I could do it.” My mom all the time taught me that you can go with any hair color, makeup etc confident that you look great. That this is who you are, and you are just showing the world your art. I take heart to own every hair color in the rainbow, and have never been afraid to try different looks.
Share Wealth
Until moving to LA, I was surrounded by plenty of girls who know nothing about the subject of beauty. Either they did not grow up around it, or it wasn’t a precedence for them to learn. In our house, we have a large drawer full of beauty products that my mom got as gifts with purchases, or we just have stash. Every vacation, birthday or simply a sleepover, she would encourage me to give my girlfriends these little gifts, and teach them how to use the products. Since highschool, I have been a resource for my friends on all things beauty related. I’ve all the time enjoyed introducing friends to new things, and educating others on how to improve their routines. I also like to encourage people to think outside the box, and try new things. I can relate this passion to my charming mother, and her joy of sharing her beauty with others.
The next time you see your mother tell her the things you are grateful for that she taught you. Maybe treat her to a makeover at Sephora, or your local department store. It’s never too late to give beauty all year long.
