Traveling is one of life’s most charming pleasures. The chance to experience the sights, sounds, tastes, and smells from all over the world can create memories that will last a lifetime. I’m one of those lucky people whose life provides the opportunity to drop everything and explore some of the interesting, fascinating, astonishing things this charming world has to offer. What’s more, I did it on a manageable budget.
My global journey lasted 49 weeks and took me to more than 25 countries. I assumed I would share with you some of the biggest highlights from my astonishing adventures that weren’t only super fun but super affordable.
Traveling by Bus in South Korea
South Korea is most likely one of Asia’s underrated gems. There is so much going on for this nation’s powerhouse, yet it just does not appear on many people’s wish lists. One of the greatest things about South Korea is the intercity bus system. Unlike Japan, where trains are a staple, Korean cities are connected by the most efficient bus system I’ve come across. They are comfy, run a lot and are at all times on time. Most importantly, they’re nearly foolproof.
Watch out for pushy little old ladies – They can be brutal!
From the majestic inland mountains to the rugged northern and southern coastlines, you can experience the warmth and sweetness of this country simply and cheaply.
Petra – Jordan’s Lost City
There are few words to describe the astonishing sight Amazing Petra architecture, carved into the craggy, rose-colored cliffs of the Al Siq gorge. Painstakingly built by the Nabateans in the 3rd century BC, Petra is really one of the world’s archaeological gems and shouldn’t be missed by any history or culture buff.
Petra is easily accessible from the pleasant town of Wadi Musa. Accommodation in the city ranges from very basic to very comfy, but even at the high end it is quite affordable for Western travelers. I stayed at the Amra Palace International Hotel, which has a rather grand name. While the name might make it sound a little more exclusive than it truly is, the hotel is clean and comfy, and only about $50/night.
Affordable Tours in Phuket
I’m not generally one to take package tours, however, I was in the final stages of my great adventure and felt like someone else was doing the hard work for me for a while so I could relax and enjoy the stunning sights of Thailand’s premier vacation spot. . Booked my Phuket tour from Travezl it is too easy, and just as cheap as if I arranged everything myself. I visited the astonishing Buddhist temple at Wat Chalong, ran against the local wildlife on Monkey Hill in between cocktails on the beach. Divine!
The sun-drenched Dalmatian coast
The West Coast of Croatia is really probably the most magical parts of Europe. Easily accessible by train or bus from Zagreb, I made a decision reluctantly to leave iconic Dubrovnik and stop a little further North in Split. I wasn’t disappointed. Split balances historical Roman architecture with sensational nightlife and astonishing restaurants.
My favourite experience is taking the very fairly priced ferry across to the nearby island of Hvar. As soon as you step off the boat you are greeted by locals who are keen to rent you a room in their house for a ridiculous price. We enjoyed a few evenings of absolutely charming al fresco dining under the grapevine entangled trellises for next to nothing.
Most places in the world offer affordable little surprises. I hope this will whet your appetite to seek it out!
