Los Angeles is known for many things. As a New Yorker, a few things stood out. There appears to be an absence of driving skills (sorry, maybe I’m impatient), and a really laid back demeanor (which causes many delayed meetings). Beyond many other notable features, the undeniable fact that you must pay for parking anywhere incredible. It really gets really expensive when you have a rental. However, I had one positive experience in that regard; Hotel Angelos. For starters, Hotel Angeleno has far more than free valet parking (right?). This cylindrical hotel located off the 405 (more on this later), is easily accessible and very different from the usual big city accommodation. Warm and smiling front desk, really upgraded me without my asking. You’ll be welcomed to your room with a bottle of wine (if you drink), and an inviting view of the Los Angeles landscape. The room itself is very modern and has everything one needs, particularly their suite. Now, with a fantastic view of Los Angeles, in some areas you can see the 405. You’d think it would be loud and dull, but once you close that door you hear nothing. I was entirely taken aback, and with such a long schedule ahead of me, I found myself sleeping in most days (I normally do not get much sleep).
On their 17th floor there’s a shocking, nearly panoramic view of Los Angeles, plus the West Restaurant (a restaurant based on American cuisine). I had the opportunity to sample many of their dishes, ending with a mouth-watering rack of ginger lamb. The curator, Laura Scollan, has taken great care in crafting this menu, and it is an awesome addition to the hotel in general.
All in all, if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the usual downtown hotels or what not, Hotel Angeleno is the place to stay. Throw in some reasonable rates (particularly in pricey Los Angeles), proximity to major highways, in addition to UCLA, an everyday wine hour for guests, and you have the perfect mix. Be sure to check them out next time you are in the Los Angeles area.
