The fruit is small, with a hard shell on the outside and white flesh on the inside in the form of a flower. To cultivate this special fruit, the mangosteen tree requires 3 types of nutrients which only come from near the sea, heavy rain, and exposure to strong sunlight. As a result, 90% of the world’s mangosteen supply comes from Southeast Asia. Mangosteen trees can take up to 15 years before bearing fruit and sometimes only bear fruit every two years.
