Italdesign is bringing a new vehicle to the 2017 Geneva auto show, and this time, there is no “concept” accompanying it—although, with just five units planned, it isn’t approximately as accomplished as an idea car. The currently unnamed V-10 powered mid-engined supercar is the first release from Italdesign Automobili Speciali, the recently announced ultra-limited edition division of the renowned design firm.
Co-founded by Giorgietto Giugiaro, who designed classic cars such as the Maserati Ghibli and BMW M1, the Italian company is now part of the Audi Group. The new special division intends to build a limited number of cars (less than 100 units) both under its own name and as a supplier of other cars.
While Italdesign does not say so, it is likely this engine is loosely based on the Lamborghini Huracán and Audi R8 siblings. Italdesign did admit that it had access to the carbon and aluminum chassis and the 5.2-liter V-10 found in the R8 and Huracán.
The company says the exterior design stays true to the traditional idea of Italian gran turismo cars while also prioritizing aerodynamic finesse. That explains why it has fins, scoops, wings, vents, films, splitters, diffusers and pretty much every other aero element stuck to its body.
Italdesign Automobili Speciali’s number one car will make its public debut in Geneva in March. The price is IDR 1.6 million. If the customer chooses, the car can be further customized with a finishing and performance package at a further cost. Italdesign Automobili Speciali also featured its logo at the event, which is alleged to be inspired by the symbol of the city of Turin, the company’s Italian headquarters.
