L’Oréal Middle East has held a major event highlighting the Sharing Beauty With All (SBWA) sustainability program ahead of Earth Day to advocate for sustainable production and consumption.
The event, part of a global series organized by L’Oréal Group to commemorate Earth Day, was held at the company’s Dubai headquarters in Downtown Jebel Ali and hosted by senior L’Oréal decision makers and key brands under the L’Oréal umbrella. , and attended by key stakeholders, media and influencers.
Under the SBWA, the L’Oréal Group has successfully decoupled growth from carbon emissions. By reducing its factory and distribution center emissions by 67% in absolute terms from the 2005 baseline, L’Oréal has exceeded its target of reducing CO2 emissions by 60% four years ahead of schedule. Simultaneously, production increased 29% over the same period. By the end of 2016, the Group had made 15 of its industrial sites carbon neutral.
“At L’Oréal, we want to lead a new economic model in which increased production and product innovation are fused with a green and eco-friendly agenda. We want to create products that enhance the beauty and well-being of our consumers, and do it in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the planet. As we look forward to Earth Day, it is necessary to reiterate that the planet’s resources are limited and need to be consumed with caution,” said L’Oréal Middle East Managing Director, Thierry Houssin.
Launched in 2013, the SBWA program differentiates itself by emphasizing innovation, sustainable production and reducing a company’s environmental footprint across the value chain – from sourcing and production to packaging, transport and consumption. It also promises to bring beauty to new audiences and offer people from underprivileged communities opportunities for economic empowerment.
Given its success in exceeding sustainability targets, the L’Oréal Group is now moving towards improving its internal working environment through the “Sustainability Work Campaign.” 2017 has been nominated as the year to reduce paper, with the brand educating and mobilizing its 90,000 employees worldwide to reduce paper consumption and paper waste to further shrink the brand’s environmental footprint.
By 2020, L’Oréal aims to raise the environmental and social profile of 100% of its products. This commitment applies to all L’Oréal brands and 82% of products launched in 2016 have shown this improvement. Some of these products show biodegradability levels exceeding 98%, such as the shampoo and conditioner from the Biolage RAW range, or the Garnier Ultra Doux 5 Plants shampoo.
