Interview with fashion stylist Rania Aldawood.
Based on your years of experience, how would you define the word “style”.
To me style is the collaboration of diverse elements of one’s total appearance. A touch of personal panache & tweaks all the time turns the same look into something spectacular. Style can be more than a fad, fashion is trend driven, these days, whereas style is limitless & can change clothes in addition to the people who wear them.
You work very closely with your clients, what are the “shoulds” and “don’ts” when styling.
Funny thing is, I do not follow the do’s & don’ts!
Even if my clients’ initial reaction is to want to wear an outfit I have not yet chosen, I still let them try it on. Working in fashion, new trends & ideas emerge all the time but it takes time for one to get used to a new look, or a new way of style. As long as they’re comfy, then they can do it anywhere. I have great relationships with my clients & only suggest looks that I know will suit them, even if they are not sure at first. The only thing I would say “do” is keep an open mind & never be afraid to think outside the box!
As a stylist, can you think of yourself as an artist painting on a blank canvas? Can you share your thoughts on this?
Yes! I love creating new & attractive high fashion looks individually for clients’ special tastes.
I never create the same look for 2 clients, even in the same clothes. Everyone needs to be individual & that means mixing up & not repeating the same outfits. Today’s fashion world is fast & widespread. Traditionally when someone is fashionable or fashionable they normally have a signature style they follow & are known for by a certain look. Today the same person can be a hippy bohemian at Isabel Marant by day, turn contemporary inspiration at Alexander Wang & Proenza, & turn into a full-fledged fashionista by night at Victoria Beckham or Alaia. Fashion has never been so fun, the breadth of trends means we can literally reinvent ourselves every day.
