When people think of diamonds, they normally visualize diamonds that are clear and glossy. Many people think that diamonds should be solitary and never consider other diamond cuts let alone consider the various colours available to them. Black diamonds are a wonderful choice for engagement rings or non-traditional jewelery in general.
Black diamonds are enhanced diamonds that have been treated with radiation to make them appear black in color. When viewed under normal light, the diamond appears black, but when viewed under fiber-optic light, the inner part of the stone is visible where you’ll really see the stone is a really dark green. That dark green color is just seen in diamonds where radiation has been used to enhance the colouration.
Natural black diamonds, which are less common, are untreated and their black coloring comes from inclusions of graphite. Usually natural black diamonds are opaque in color and remain very brittle and hard for a jeweler to work with. They are very smooth and polishing and finishing diamonds can be tricky.
When attempting to find black diamond cuts to add to your collection, you should consider enhanced black diamonds rather than “natural” black diamonds. The cut will stand the test of time and is still considered a real diamond to the jewelery world. The black diamond set with contrasting clear “white” diamonds is completely astonishing and classic. Black diamonds have gotten very popular. This is a gemstone that’s rich in color and presence.
Black diamonds in special cuts are also becoming more common. Pearls and diamonds will at all times be classics and will last through the ages. Black diamonds added to classic jewelery renew jewelery from collections that have weathered the ages. The combination of white or black pearls with black diamonds are some of my favourite combinations. Pair this with white gold and that I find it hard to go wrong. The jewelery pieces of this combination are absolutely astonishing.
When choosing jewelery for yourself or for somebody else as a gift, the main thing to consider is the person themselves. Some people never wear dark clothes and are only drawn to colourful gemstones. To them a black diamond may not be of interest or need to be considered for an event. This way the recipient of the gift will not feel the pressure that can come with jewellery. The last thing you want as a gift giver is for somebody to be afraid to wear or use your gift. A slice of the event will stop this from happening. Consider a cross in black diamonds or a brooch if most of the recipient’s preferences do not normally include something as dark as a black diamond.
