Going camping is partly about getting out in nature and doing something active. But it is also about enjoying the scenery and seeing something different not a city.
When it comes to charming places to camp in the US, you are spoiled for choice. No other country in the world has so much beauty or variety. And because the country is literally the size of a continent, there are some unexplored territories to explore. Most of the time, you have the place to yourself.
Let’s have a look at some of the most charming locations for camping in the country. You will not believe how astonishing some of them are.
White Mountain National Forest, Maine
If you are trying to find someplace cool in the fall, you will want to take a look at the White Mountain National Forest, a park that straddles Maine and New Hampshire. This region sits right in the far north of the Appalachian, supplying you with a wonderful combination of undulating countryside and mountains.
The region is home to several hiking and camping centers, supplying you with plenty of options. There are shelters too, but they may be closed when you decide to travel, given the current pandemic situation.
Shenandoah National Park, Virginia
If you head south to Virginia, you will ultimately find Shenandoah National Park – a large game reserve with more than 500 miles of trails. Visitors often try to hike the impressive Old Rag Mountain, a sixteen-mile round-trip, taking around eight or nine hours to complete, depending on your fitness level. The park is now open and offers a number of camping spots. Some of them are prepared for hygienic camping, with lots of cleaners to keep everybody safe when using the bathroom.
Assateague Island National Seashore, Maryland
If you are an Ocean City fan, you will love Assateague Island National Seashore, a wonderful area for beachside camping, swimming, surfing, and other water sports. Be sure to bring a tent for 5 people – this is the kind of place you go for a party. Also, make sure to take a look at the wild horses that live in the area, making a living by munching on the rare herbs that grow along the coast.
Dry Torjib National Park, Florida
If you are trying to find charming marine life, then make sure to pay a camping trip to Kering Torjib National Park in Florida, only a few miles from Fort Jefferson. This area is famous for being near the biggest barrier reef in the world. Campers traveling there only need a brief boat ride to see the reef up close. Make sure to pack your snorkel gear so you can see it in all its glory.
Big Bend National Park, Texas
Big Bend National Park sits near the famous Rio Grande – an uncommon river whose color depends on the season and where you occur to be along its length. This campground is ideal for anyone trying to find a riverside landscape. The park is known for its long hikes, canoeing opportunities and rafting instructions.
The park has three main campsites, each of which has all the facilities you need. Currently, all sites are open, but some are operating at reduced capacity, so you will need to book in advance. Also, be sure you’re on your own before traveling – most visitor centers are currently closed to the public.
Sawtooth National Forest, Idaho
If you are trying to find places to visit in the Smoky Mountains, Sawtooth National Forest in Idaho is the place to be. The scenery looks like something out of a painting with snow-capped mountains towering over the lake below.
If you travel to this destination, make sure to take lots of warm, waterproof clothing with you. It’s very remote, and temperatures can drop dramatically at night. The park is currently in its reopening phase and welcomes visitors back after a long break.
Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming
Grand Teton National Park is the second popular destination for skiers vacationing in Jackson Hole. Here you will find six camping grounds in addition to the National Elk Refuge, where you will find tons of these cute four-legged creatures.
Grand Teton is known as a wonderful campsite for its wildlife and views of the Rocky Mountains. What’s good about this area is that the hikes are challenging, but not too difficult for the casual tourist. Many of the local hiking trails just circle the lake, so you can enjoy this place without a high fitness level.
