Golf is a sport that requires special equipment, but most significantly your clothes. It’s important to dress appropriately so you do not distract other players or slow down the game. Here’s what you should know before you step onto the gridiron for one of your next rounds!
UV protection
Playing golf can be a fun and rewarding experience, but it also requires spending long hours in the sun. Golfers know that the sun can be a pain. They also know that if they want to continue playing, they need protection from UV rays and other light sources. That means you need to protect yourself from UV rays by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses for golfers, and a hat with long brims to keep the sun out of your eyes. The risk of skin cancer is significantly higher for golfers than for other types of athletes because they’re exposed to more ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
Sunblock
This may look like an apparent tip, but sunscreen is a must when playing golf in the summer or on sunny days. There are various kinds of sunscreens for various purposes – some are water-resistant and last all day, while others need to be applied more repeatedly throughout the day to maintain sun protection. The smartest thing to do is to bring several pairs of sunglasses when you go outside as sunscreen can wash off if exposed to rain or even heavy sweating during your game. Also, choose a sunscreen made particularly for sports activities over other products – it offers better protection and will not irritate your eyes.
No Baggy Pants
Avoid wearing pants that pocket at the knees or at the bottom of your pants. This type of baggy clothing can hinder proper swing and cause limited movement on the court. Pants should fit near your body but not so tight as to restrict movement. Golfers should dress in a way that enables them to move around easily and doesn’t interfere with other players. Trousers are the best type of trousers to wear while playing golf. They are snug and let you move about without having to worry about your clothes getting in the way. Alternatively, golfers can wear shorts that are worn just above the knee, slightly below the knee, or mid-thigh. If you are worried about protecting yourself from UV rays, wear light-colored pants over dark ones to stop overheating.
Shirt With Collar
Wearing a top with a collar shows players that you’re ready to play golf and respect those around you. Make sure the collar is worn – do not wear it, which is taken into account ‘sloppy’. This also applies to shirts that have buttons, not collars like polo’s – these should even be buttoned while playing. A collar is a compulsory wardrobe standard for men, but women have more options with regards to choosing what to wear.
Shoes With Rubber Soles
When you are on the golf course, wear rubber-soled shoes. Sports such as basketball and tennis require a special type of shoe that has traction on the bottom to stop the player from slipping. This also applies to golf. You want to avoid wearing shoes that are slippery or leather-soled as they can cause your feet to slip while swinging. If you need to wear formal shoes, ensure they’ve rubber soles so you do not lose your footing. Also, remember the fact that you’ll need to replace your golf shoes right after you are on the course.
Avoid Fragrance and Cologne
Just like how you would not wear lots of cologne or perfume to the gym, it is best not to wear these things when you play golf either. Some people are allergic to fragrances and can end up with a bad headache from wearing them – even those that do not cause an allergic reaction can still be annoying as a result of their strong smell which other players will notice and possibly distract from during their game. You do not want anything to get in the way of your focus and preparation before hitting the green, so avoid fragrances altogether!
As a general rule, wear snug clothing when playing golf. You do not want to wear pajamas and sandals as they aren’t appropriate for playing outside – but you should also avoid wearing clothes like jeans or sweaters. Golf clothing is not that hard to determine. You only need to consider the type of clothing that is suitable for the weather and conditions, and that does not interfere with other players during their game. Follow these tips and you should be dressed properly every time you go out on the gridiron!
