Comic book characters have catchy catchphrases; with great power comes great responsibility. It seems nearly too easy, but in fact, it contains a greater truth. In our world, the realm of entertainment has a valuable influence over the majority. The average person lives and dies on their favourite soaps, primetime television, and sports teams. Our entertainment is what keeps us ticking day to day, and those on the pitch nearly like gods, receive our adulation. But there’s so much more to it.
This responsibility is easily handled, with most of those in the spotlight abusing it. Regardless, if they’re making albums for teens or movies for all ages, there is a disconnect sometimes. Whether it is outward drug use, manipulating naïve minors, or some other gratuitous act, there appears to be an aura of Icarus. They fly closer to the shining sun of fame, forgetting that they’re idols, role models, and teachers. Others take the power they hold and promise things to further their own misguided ideals. There is not much a deer-eyed youngster hasn’t done for fame, fortune, or both.
The pressure our leaders face is tremendous, but like it or not, they signed up for this. They have morals, policies, and truth to protect. Of course, this comes after some very serious accusations dealing with the very high-profile director, over the past few weeks. Whether true or not, it shows us that power is very easy to abuse, and that addiction, whatever its nature, can destroy not only yourself, but also those around you. No one deserves to have their youth taken away from them, and nobody should allow life and dreams to be crushed to satisfy a sick appetite.
We can take some lessons from any literature, even comics. Some direct quotes from individuals who put it, live in a kind of ugliness. Strictly speaking, we cannot lose ourselves in the power given to us. Life, career and keenness for what we do are in balance. What we do next is in our hands.
