The son of Palestinian migrants, Khaled spent the first years of his life in New Orleans, Louisiana. Both of his parents were musicians and they often played Arabic Music. Khaled also fell in love with music, and his first idol was Michael Jackson, but gradually he developed an interest in hip-hop. His parents supported him in music but the family had to move to Orlando, Florida, where, at the age of 13, he started determining how to DJ. Due to budgetary difficulties, the Khaled family returned to New Orleans. While still young, Khaled quickly began working in the city’s Odyssey record store and started to develop rapport with up-and-coming rappers such as Birdman and Lil Wayne. He also tried his hand at being a break-dancer and a bee boy. But he realized that his calling was in music. He got his first break as a university Radio DJ. At Miami’s pirate radio station Mixx 93, Khaled approaches the on-air DJ and asks for a portion of their timeslot. Marcello Valenzano and Andre Lyon, who virtually left town and are known as the producing duo Cool & Dre, complied. He worked his way up to become the number one Radio DJ, and he started collaborating with everybody in the business. As he became popular because of his taste in music, he also became the talk of the town
