On Tuesday, 16 August, Bolt began his journey to beat the 200m world record by earning a place in the semi-finals on 17 August. Bolt said he wanted to make it under 19 seconds.
Although Bolt had hoped to make it under 19 seconds in the 200m, his fastest time this year was 19.89 seconds at the London Anniversary Olympics in July.
Bolt faces stiff competition in Rio. Four runners have outrun Bolt in the 200m this season.
US LaShawn Merritt, who clocked 19.74 in the US Olympic trials on Eugene, and 100m silver medalist Justin Gatlin clocked 19.75 last month.[1]
The 200m final will take place on Thursday, 18 August at 22:30 Rio time.
