While diplomatic ties with Cuba have been restored since January 2015, Americans still don’t have permission to travel to the island for tourist purposes. All visits must be declared legally educational.
According to CNN, “U.S. citizens can legally travel to Cuba if they engage in 12 categories of activities such as professional research, participating in athletic events, performing in concerts, working on humanitarian projects, or taking part in educational activities.”
CNN reports that US cruise lines such as Carnival have considered offering cruises for Americans with educational tours and a few ferry operators are looking to start re-establishing regular service between Florida and Cuba.
Based on Huffington Post, If you are planning an educational trip to Cuba, it should be a person-to-person trip. This means you’ll have to meet Cuban nationals in “real” settings, such as schools and community centers. In the past, Americans had to prove their educational goals with full cultural itineraries generally booked by tour companies, which could be expensive.
Traveling to Cuba just got simpler. There are several daily flights from Miami. More flights were added from destinations such as Tampa, New York and Orlando operated by major carriers including American and JetBlue. Seats must be reserved by a third party charter company as seats can’t be sold until a new civil aviation agreement is made between the US and Cuba.
Huffington Post offer a price list Here.
It says, “Spending a week in Cuba will cost you around $315, but with expensive charter flights an average of $717 per ticket, your grand total will come to about $1,032.”
Cuba does not have the best internet and cellphone service for Americans. Based on Huffington Post, Google is in the early stages of equipping the island with high-speed internet. Only Verizon and Sprint offer roaming cellphone coverage on the island. Communication can be expensive and limited during travel.
Prices are expected to fall as relations continue to change between Cuba and the US
