According to On The Issues, a non-partisan, non-profit organization that provides politics candidate attitude on every issue, Bernie Sanders is what they call a “hard core liberal”.
The box is diamond shaped and made with social and political issues in mind which finally determines where you fall. Even although Bernie is far left in this chart, Americans tend to be in the middle. The main difference between left-wing and right-wing ideologies centers on individual rights vs. government power. Left-wing beliefs are liberal in that they believe society is best served by an expanded role of government. Those on the right believe that society is best when individual rights and civil liberties are dominant and the role of government is reduced.
Millennial is a term for people who have reached adulthood around the turn of the 21st century. Millennial birth dates can range from 1979 to 1999. Millennials grew up in a world that’s electronic, online, and socially connected. They are the generation that has received the most marketing attention. As the most ethnically diversified generation, Millennials tend to be tolerant of differences. Many were raised by baby boomer kids, who wanted to praise their kids to make them stronger rather than taking the tough love approach. Being told that they’re special, they have a tendency to be confident. While largely a positive trait, millennial self-confidence is believed to extend into the realm of entitlement and narcissism. They seem to be more optimistic about America’s future than any other generation, despite the undeniable fact that they’re the first generation since Silent Generation to be expected to be less economically successful than their parents.
So why do Millennials love Bernie Sanders so much? About half of Millennials said they weren’t involved in politics at all and they did not really care who was running for president. They feel politicians are liars and elections aren’t decided by their vote so why bother. Ironically, if you ask these same people how they feel about the Republican primary, many will laugh and say something mean about Donald Trump. It seemed they were paying more attention than letting on. They are frightened of the idea of the 1 percent, the rich elite. When you ask them about Bernie Sanders, the answers change. Bernie offers them the idea of hope. He was the anti-1 percent superhero they were attempting to find.
Bernie Sanders is a democratic candidate for President of the United States. He is serving his second term in the US senate after being re-elected in 2012 with over seventy percent of the vote. He lives in Vermont but is initially from New York.
With that said, I offer you the top 8 reasons Millennials love Bernie Sanders:
- He said what he felt.
Bernie Sanders entered this election as an unknown from Vermont. He was progressive and often labeled as a socialist. He said what he believed and believed what he said. Throughout his campaign, in addition to his tenure in office, he stuck to his beliefs and never wavered.
- He is not “bought” by any super-PACS who can control his stance on any given issue if he’s elected to office.
Sanders regularly portrayed the campaign finance system as corrupt and particularly resisted being sponsored by any super-PAC. In fact, Sanders and Trump are the only candidates without a brilliant PAC standing behind them. Sanders believes mega donors and Wall Street have influence and power over candidates. He has run his campaign largely on the contributions of individual supporters.
- He has been a gay marriage pro from day one
Sanders voted against the “Don’t ask, Don’t tell” in 1993, in addition to against the Defensive Marriage Act in 1996, which said any state could legally refuse to recognize same-sex marriage. He has fought for gay rights even when opinion polls were against the issue and he continues to fight for those rights. She is a co-sponsor of the Equality Act, which includes protection from discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
- He supports racial justice platforms
Sanders has promised to turn our country into one that values people of color. On his website, he admits that African Americans are twice as likely to be arrested and almost four times as likely to experience the use of force during encounters with police. Neither candidate is willing to discuss race-related issues.
- Bernie Sanders Supports the Decriminalization of Cannabis
He wants hash removed from the list of controlled substances to reduce the number of individuals removed for cannabis-related drug offenses. He believes the war on drugs is a failure and supports treatment, not punishment.
- Bernie has never been involved in any kind of scandal
Bernie has been in politics since 1981, when he was elected Mayor of Burlington, Virginia. He then served in the House of Representatives followed by serving in the Senate. Not once in all these years has he been accused of or involved in any sort of scandal.
- He supports free higher education
Many early Millennials are plagued by college debt. Millennials are the first generation in American history predicted to earn less than their parents. He backed a Wall Street tax to pay for each American child’s college education. Since 1980, tuition fees have tripled at private and public four-year universities. From 2002 to 2012, prices for undergraduate tuition and room and board have increased by 40 percent. This rate of increase is four times faster than inflation. Bernie understands how unfair this is and has promised to help stop it.
- Millennials want “true” progressives in the office.
For all the above reasons, Sanders has proven himself to be a trustworthy and competent future leader of the United States. She has been a voice of equality since the launch of her political career. He gave Millennials hope for the future they so desperately seek in a president.
