We all have our favourite TV shows. But what makes us love them so much? For some, this is riveting storytelling. For others, it may be a character of fun, humor, or drama.
All of these elements make for an amazing show, but the character wardrobe takes television to a whole new level. Each character’s personal style allows the viewer to feel immersed in their world, and their clothing can even influence what you wear.
If you have never given much thought to clothes on TV shows, we have got you covered! Here are 6 truly inspiring fashion shows that look great in real life.
1) Crazy Man
We cannot exclude Mad Men from this list. Many fans hail the show as one of the best fashions in TV history.
Mad Men throws it back to the 60s. Fans admire Don Draper’s stylish Fedoras and vintage suits. That Crazy Man Dress and skirts are also worthy of praise; the form fitting, satin collar and other features make it a real period piece.
2) Saved by Bell
As probably the most iconic sitcoms of the 90s, Saved by the Bell perfectly captures the fad of the late 80s and early 90s.
Lisa Turtle is probably the most influential characters. As the group’s fashion maven, she is by far the best-dressed character. You can at all times find her rocking denim dresses, crop tops or scrunchies. She’s also not afraid to take risks (remember her accessorized leopard print minidress?) Considering how iconic her style is, it is no wonder she got accepted into the Fashion Institute of Technology right after graduation (spoiler alert!).
Other characters even have major styles. Slater’s tank top, Zack’s sweater, and Jessie’s vest all scream 90s. Unique outfits and fun colours make you want to attend Bayside High.
3) Stranger Things
Set in the 80s, Netflix’s Stranger Things single-handedly pushed for a return to retro fashion.
There’s something really cool and nostalgic about the wardrobes of the characters. You’ll love Steve’s bomber jacket, Jonathan’s corduroy pants, and Nancy’s colourful sweater.
Stranger Things has nothing short of a “cool” look, but it also defines a “geek” style. Fans cannot get enough of this wacky trucker-style hat and retro graphic tee from Dustin.
4) That 70’s show
The costume designer for The ’70s Show could not have conveyed the decade more perfectly. Each outfit is made as attractive as possible.
Just think of Eric’s straight-cut jeans and a plaid shirt, or Jackie’s scarf and chunky disco wedges. And, let’s not forget Donna’s classic high-waisted bell bottom jeans with a T-shirt. She effortlessly embraced both the feminine and masculine sides of 70s fashion.
5) Gossip Girl
While it is hard to relate to prosperous Manhattan teens, we live out the extravagant looks Gossip Girl’s characters offer us.
We particularly like how each character has their signature piece. Blair’s headband, Chuck’s scarf, and Serena’s signature top will make you want to claim a signature piece of your own.
6) This Is Us
Want a show featuring fashion from across the decades? See Here We Are!
The series follows a family of three generations. Viewers are bombarded with flashbacks and jump into the future, providing you with glimpses of fashion from a different era. It’s interesting to see how the character styles evolve (and how some of them stay the same).
These are only a few examples of TV shows with inspiring fashion. The next time you watch your favourite show, make sure to pay attention to what the characters are wearing. It certainly makes you appreciate the show more than you already do. Plus, you might even find some elements to incorporate into your everyday look!
