Malaysian-born designer Edmund Ooi presented his S/S 2016 collection at New York Men’s Fashion Week last night at The Milk Building in New York’s Meatpacking District. Vision Ooi brings an interesting perspective on men’s sportswear. This collection inspired by “flamboyant stitching with sci-fi influences” features reflective fabrics, lurex techno knits, jersey and layered webbing, which give a “bound in space” feel.
Raised in her mother’s studio, Ooi has a keen eye for detail that’s chronicled in this collection. Webbing is carefully placed and sewn to the jacket, drawstring, and laces in the very unlikely of places, to create a distinctive look. At one point I assumed that Edward Scissorhands might have been Ooi’s inspiration, given the deconstructed yet structured look of every work.
The collection absolutely achieves the goals Ooi intended. It’s flamboyant, a little quirky (in a great way), experimental, and absolutely gimmicky. I did not expect to see the average man in this, but it is unquestionably avant-garde sportswear for the bold fashionista.
