Improving How You Brew Your Coffee at Home

For most people, a good cup of joe is something they enjoy every day. Unfortunately, going to a coffee shop or restaurant every day can be very demanding. The good thing is that you can brew great coffee right at home, no matter how basic or fancy your machine is.

1. Fresh, Whole Coffee Beans are Great

Buying a bag of ground coffee can be something you enjoy doing, but it might be wrong. Most of these bags generally don’t have a roast date. Plus, some bags may have been sitting on the grocery shelf for months. Instead, you should choose fresh, whole nuts.

Experts recommend using coffee beans within a month of the roast date. So, take your time to find a store that will roast your coffee on site otherwise you can get fresh coffee beans and roast them yourself. In this way, you are sure to get the peak taste for your drink.

2. Grind the Beans Before Brewing

Some people tend to grind all their coffee beans and package them to store for future use. According to experts, coffee beans generally start to lose their flavor within 30 minutes of being ground. As such, this means using ground coffee may not taste the way you want.

You can ensure your drink has a robust taste by grinding the coffee beans just before brewing your coffee. Remember that the size of the grind also matters. For example, too coarse will make your coffee watery while too fine will make your cup taste bitter. Manual grinders are great if you want consistent grind sizes.

3. Proper Storage is Important

If you want to preserve the taste and freshness of your coffee beans, sufficient coffee storage very important. Most people generally use a vacuum sealed container that has a one-way valve. This works great, but you can even get a standard Mason jar to store your coffee beans in.

Usually, you will want to ensure your seeds are protected from direct heat, light, and moisture during storage. Therefore, you should store your nuts in an airtight, opaque container at room temperature. Some people tend to like the beauty of a clear container, but it allows light to penetrate, which in turn affects the taste of your coffee.

4. Choose the Right Brewing Temperature

Automatic machines make it easy to brew coffee quickly and simply. However, one known fault of this machine is the bad coffee brewing temperature. If you’re making drip coffee, the ideal temperature range is 195 to 205 degrees Fahrenheit.

Newer machines let you set the right temperature manually, which is an excellent thing. This is something that the old machine lacked. If you have one, use a thermometer to get the temperature right before placing the coffee in the hopper. In some cases, pre-boiling water in a kettle may help. Just be sure that the temperature doesn’t exceed 205 degrees.

5. Measure the Right Amount of Coffee

The amount you use to brew a cup of coffee also determines the final taste. Therefore, you need to use the same amount of coffee per unit every time you brew. For above average nuts, the golden rule with regards to measurements is a ratio of 1:16. Or, you could try three tablespoons of coffee for each 12 ounces of water.

You can play with a 1:16 ratio depending on how strong you like your coffee. Do you like Brazilian or Hawaiian coffee, like Pure Kona coffee beansmake sure to determine the correct dosage according to your taste preferences.

Brew a Proper O’Joe Cup

Purchasing the right coffee and the brewing process are important considerations when making your coffee. Don’t store roasted coffee for months as it will lose its flavor over time. You can even add spices like cinnamon for a delicious change of taste. Also, keep your coffee maker clean at all times to avoid anything that will change the taste of your coffee.
